FAQs

What Determines Your Health?

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) lifestyle contributes to as much as 53% of health; environmental  factors contribute to 21%, genetics and body make-up contribute to 16%; and medical factors contribute to just 10%.

What is Professional Coaching?

The ICF (International Coach Federation) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential…”  Coaching helps you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be. This is accomplished through a process of self-discover, clarification, eliciting effective solutions and strategies, and creating an action plan and accountability.

Why Go with a Coaching Solution?

If you could have done it on your own,   you would have done it by now!  If you are still trying to do it on your own and NOT succeeding, ask yourself “how’s this working out for you?” If your answer is “not so good” – its time to get a coach!

How is the Wellness Mapping 360°™ Health & Wellness Coaching Different from Other Types of Coaching?

The Wellness Mapping 360°™  includes all the essentials of professional coaching AND incorporates the science of behavior change.  This includes the model of readiness for change and the neuroscience of change – how your brain actually adapts to new behaviors.  Understanding the neuroscience of change is especially important in creating the individualized Wellness Map (Plan) that is best suited to you and meeting  the challenges that show up along the road to lasting lifestyle change.  Many coaches and coaching models write-off individuals whom they label  “not ready to change”.  Using readiness for change allows the Coach to work very effectively with anyone who is both wanting and willing to make lifestyle change. I work with you where you are right now – whether that means creating your plan and jumping right into action or beginning with “I’m thinking about it”, and progressing to preparation and then to action.

Why Do We Need to Include the Science of Behavioral Change into Health & Wellness Coaching?

Health & Wellness Coaching is about making lasting lifestyle changes. Key words are lifestyle and lasting. Lifestyle change can include adding in new behaviors, quitting behaviors and changing others. Without getting into too much detail, behavior is something that over time becomes patterned in our brain as well as the outward physical manifestation that we see and experience.  Changing behavior is not just about will power or even choice.  It requires a thought out co-designed (between you and Coach) plan that is – not too big and not too small. Too big is a formula for failure – too small may not challenge you at all or hold your attention and interest. Knowing what is the right plan for you right now – that’s what the Co-Active Health & Wellness Coach  knows how to create with you! Finally, behavior change does require the assistance of tracking and accountability. Tracking your progress  is especially important when we are working to change ingrained patterns and habits. Tracking helps us to see what is working and what is not working – alter the course as needed and discover new strategies.  Together we explore and try out what will work best for you.

Too often people make quick shifts without any solid foundation and then beat themselves up when it does not last! Making lasting change is about creating new patterns of behavior that become ‘normalized’ over time; building in the support to help you even after the coaching ends; identifying the long term motivational factors that speak to your values; developing tried and true strategies for what to do when you meet challenges or fall back; and building in your own solid accountability.

Are All Health & Wellness Coaches the Same?

Absolutely not. You want to be sure that your coach is certified through a Health & Wellness Coach Training Program. You also want to know what that training included. Is the coach trained in the essentials of coaching – the stages of change and the neuroscience of behavior change?  You may want a coach who wears 2 hats (a health care professional with a Health & Wellness Coaching certification) or you may want a Professional Coach with a strong background and experience in coaching with the training and skills to integrate your doctor’s lifestyle prescription for you, and/or your medical treatment plan into the coaching plan, and who may work collaboratively with another specialist (e.g., nutritionist, trainer, etc) of your choice.

How is Professional Health & Wellness  Coaching Different from Consulting or Working with Health Related Professionals?

The big difference is that the consultant, health-care professional or related health services provider is “the expert”.  They will prescribe, educate or advocate changes and behavior that is medically/physically indicated based on their area of expertise.  Their knowledge may indeed be an important part of the coaching plan.   However in your life, YOU are expert. You know how you ‘tick’ – what will work and what won’t.  The Coach brings expertise in behavior change and providing the facilitative conditions for you- the expert of your life – to create a do-able plan, stay on track and make the lasting lifestyle changes that you want.

I See My Medical Care Provider Regularly – How Can Coaching Help Me?

Your medical care provider is primarily concerned with your physical health and compliance with the medical plan. Your coach is  concerned with the “lifestyle prescription” that supports the medical plan and with your wellness. Wellness is about living life consciously, on purpose with self-acceptance, inter-connectedness, meaning and purpose. Coach becomes part of your total health & wellness team.

What is Wellness?

Wellness is very individual.  Here is one definition from Micheal Arloski: “Wellness is the experience of living life with high levels of awareness, conscious choice, self-acceptance, inter-connectedness, love, meaning and purpose.” It is about living consciously and making conscious choices.  Its also about being connected to others and having purpose and meaning in our lives. We may not always be exactly where we want to be in terms of health or wellness  – we may even be experiencing a serious medical challenge – what is important is that we are pointed in the direction of wellness. And yes -we can have wellness even in the face of illness.

Can Coaching Help if I have a Serious Medical Condition?

Yes. Coaching is aimed at working with you to create and follow a lifestyle plan that both complements and supports compliance with your medical program. Coaching also helps you to move in the direction of ‘wellness’ (see What is Wellness?), making conscious choices, living consciously, having connection to others, and having purpose and meaning.

Can I Thrive Even if I Have a Serious Health Challenge?

Yes you can! Thriving is a very personal assessment.  What we do know is that the more “wellness” is in your life, the more you will thrive – even with your health challenge.

What if I Have Tried Before and Failed  – or Succeeded but Went Back to Old Patterns?

Great – that means that you are more likely to succeed now. Real change usually entails learning what does not work –  by falling down or just not being able to implement what you thought you could. Most people don’t succees because they try to do too much too fast; they encounter old neurological pathways of behavior in the brain that work against them; they succomb to the “Gremlin” – that little (or maybe loud) voice in the back of your head that really wants us to keep the status quo; and because they don’t know the ‘science’ of change.

Success is a journey. Its about finding your true motivation, tying in your values, taking small steady steps, trial and error, seeing what is working and what is not, seeing how you are really doing – not just how you think you are doing. Its about having support and real methods of tracking and accountability, and discovering new found strengths along the way. Its about having someone who can remind you of why you are doing this anyway when the going gets tough; having someone who can help strategize how to deal with challenges, celebrate even the smallest successes with you, and turn failure into learning. It about having someone who holds your agenda and knows that you are the ONE who is completely and naturally creative, resourceful and whole – and who calls you forth into your well life!

What Is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)?

EFT  is a powerful self-help method based on research showing that emotional trauma contributes greatly to disease. Clinical trials have shown that EFT tapping is able to rapidly reduce the emotional impact of memories and incidents that trigger emotional distress. EFT uses elements of Cognitive Therapy and Exposure Therapy, and combines them with Acupressure  in the form of fingertip tapping on 12 acupuncture points. It is simple and can facilitate getting past some barriers to change.  EFT is done in person.
